False ceiling in Brisbane for local charity

False ceiling in Brisbane

The job

I got the call to build a new false ceiling in Brisbane at a disability support service centre. They are installing a new woodworking area for the local disabled and requested a new ceiling for the room. Firstly the intention was to reduce air conditioning costs, whilst creating a fresh new look. Secondly, our client was concerned that installing new lighting may be a difficult process. One of the benefits of using a suspended ceiling is that it is easy to install extra bars to accommodate 1200mm x 300mm light troffers. The most popular option at the moment is to use led light panels. This is due to the fact they look great, are very economical to run and are becoming more affordable as time goes on.

The build

The new exposed grid ceiling is a USG/Boral exposed grid system. In addition, a  large flange metal wall angle was selected for the perimeter trim, due to the exterior walls being tilt panel. Being a tilt panel this means there can potentially be more movement than usual in the ceiling. In turn, this means that there is an increased chance to the perimeter bars falling off the angle due to movement. This is countered by the larger angle giving more room to move before the bars fall off. The downside of using a larger angle such as this is that does not follow existing walls well if they are not straight. To counter this effect it can be necessary to add extra cuts or joins in the angle to prevent, bowing and twisting of the angle.

The result

After the grid is leveled and straightened, usg/boral impressions acoustic tiles were installed. The result is a clean, practical and serviceable ceiling that will do its job well.
