Raked Tile Ceiling in Brisbane
The Challenge
A Manly West church contacted us late in 2017, regarding updating their multi-purpose area with a new ceiling. After considering the options they choose an exposed grid raked tile ceiling fitted with an acoustic tile. The ceiling was to be raked following the pitch of the roof, with a 3.0m level section at the peak. It was decided to run the ceiling grid tight under the portal frames to allow maximum height around the perimeter. We decided to use a standard metal L wall angle and finish on the far end with a bulkhead.
The Solution
SCQ constructed this ceiling using USG/Boral exposed grid. I have always liked USG grid due to its great design and QRC locking system. The challenges involved low clearance on the raked sections of the ceiling. Low clearance ceiling drops require high levels of hanger set out accuracy, which requires extra time invested when setting the ceiling out. With raked designs like these standard clamp style hangers are ineffective, the solution is to use a fish hook adjustable hanger. This method of ceiling suspension takes a little longer to build, however is a much more reliable method of rake suspension. We fitted the ceiling with USG/Boral “impressions” 600 x 1200″ acoustic mineral fibre tiles. Impressions tiles offer an excellent blend of performance and affordability with decent acoustic properties. Stay tuned for reviews on impressions tiles and USG/Boral ceiling grid.
The result?
A fantastic new refreshed area that not only looks great but performs as well. If you would like to know more about USG grid and tiles follow the links below.
